This is a very sad moment in the history of our nation. I wish to pass my deepest condolences to all members of the Royal Family who are in my thoughts today.
For over seventy years Queen Elizabeth II exemplified public service, she was an inspiration to our country for generations across the Commonwealth and the world.
As a young man I was proud to play a part at the official opening ceremony of the Humber Bridge by the Queen in 1981. I recall the overwhelming show of affection and respect for her on that day, a feeling she encountered wherever she went in her many decades of service. She will remain in our hearts forever.
Over the coming days I will work with the Chief Constable to ensure that Humberside Police are able to play a full and active part in supporting our communities and keeping them safe during this important time of national mourning.
