The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (OPCC), in conjuction with the Department for Transport (DfT), are rolling out pase 2 of Operation Snap-Journey, a road safety initiative with distribution of Dash Cams to essential road users, free of charge.

In March, it was announced that the OPCC had been granted a significant funding allocation of £65,000 by the DfT for this project. Over the past few months, over 250 Dash and Cycle Cams have been given to key road users across our region. Phase two will see an additional 85 dash cams being distributed by the OPCC which have been supplied by Road Angel – an award winning UK manufacturer, and will be installed by Halfords.

Gary Digva, the visionary behind Road Angel said: “Operation Snap-Journey is a valuable initiative designed to improve road safety and deter those that place other road users at risk. We are delighted to continue to support the OPCC and the Dft by providing Road Angel dash cams to essential road users to better identify poor road behaviour and effectively deal with driving offences.”

This is a collaborative approach with Lincolnshire OPCC, who are concurrently conducting a similar dash cam trial. This collaboration will enable a comprehensive evaluation of various strategies and their effectiveness in promoting road safety. The evaluation will be carried out by a third party, appointed by the DfT.

Lilian Greenwood, Future of Roads Minister, said: “We want to make our roads safer for all users, so it’s great to see nearly 300 free dash cams have been distributed thanks to this pilot scheme.”

“We’re analysing evidence from all projects funded by the Roads Policing Review, and look forward to working with partners across the country as we bring more safety and security to our roads.”

Jonathan Evison, Police and Crime Commissioner said “In our region, we sadly lose too many lives on our roads every year, and many more with a significant number of life changing injuries. We must change driver behaviour and make our roads safer. This initiative will mean there are more eyes on the road to catch bad driving and hopefully lead to prosecution. One death on our roads is one too many.”

There was an application process to ensure we focus on the key road users who regularly use the road network and are willing to download dashcam footage to Operation Snap on a consistent basis where they identify inappropriate driving behaviour by other road users. Anyone with a dash cam can upload evidence of bad drivers to Humberside Police Operation Snap

The OPCC is hoping to carry out a third and final phase in early September, where around 100 further Road Angel dash cams will be distributed. To apply for a camera in the next phase, please ensure you are signed up to My Community Alert, and consent to messages from the Police and Crime Commissioner, where we will announce the application process.
