White Ribbon Day 2023

The Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and the Humber Violence Prevention Partnership (VPP) are once again proud to support White Ribbon Day 2023.

This year, the White Ribbon UK Campaign advocates for individuals and organisations to consistently make choices and take actions to #ChangeTheStory for women and girls, empowering them to live free from the fear of violence.

Today's White Ribbon Day signals the commencement of 16 days of activism focused on raising awareness about gender-based violence. Here are some of the statistics that highlight the importance of the campaign:

• Nearly 1 in 4 girls in mixed sex schools have had experiences of unwanted sexual touching
• in school. (EVAW)
• 30% of women have experienced workplace harassment, with 81% reporting that they had been harassed by a man/men. (Government Equalities Office)
• 1.7 million women experienced domestic abuse in the year ending March 2022. (ONS)

All staff members have received training to become White Ribbon Ambassadors, pledging to never commit, excuse or remain silent about male violence and abuse against women.

Speaking about the White Ribbon campaign, the PCC Jonathan Evison said: "We must collectively acknowledge that there is no easy solution to the violence and abuse women endure at the hands of some men.

“It is imperative for us to share the responsibility of addressing and condemning violence, abuse, and harassment against women and girls.

“Addressing the perpetrators and the culture of misogyny and sexism is crucial. Men must actively combat abuse and refuse to tolerate it.

“Changing this culture requires men to be vigilant, introspective, and vocal in promoting respect and equality, and in confronting and challenging harassing and violent behaviour."
