Scunthorpe town centre set for new police station backed by Government cash
Plans for a new police station in Scunthorpe have been announced - a move set to further boost the high street by bringing police officers into the heart of the town.
Funding for the project has been supported by the Towns Fund Board as one of a number of schemes designed to transform Scunthorpe using £21m of Government cash.
Rob Waltham, Leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: "We are working with a range of partners to create a new, vibrant town centre - attracting people in for many different reasons.
"Having a centrally located police station will be a really important element of this - many residents have told us that a stronger and more visible police presence in the centre of town would be welcomed.
"It is great news to be working with the Police and Crime Commissioner towards making this vision a reality."
The new building will replace the existing station on Corporation Road with improved facilities for the public and working space for Humberside Police officers and staff.
A preferred site has been identified on Scunthorpe High Street which is currently been evaluated to ensure that it meets the needs of all parties involved.
Police and Crime Commissioner Jonathan Evison said: “In recent years there has been considerable investment in modernising the Humberside Police estate.
"The new building at Melton has upgraded the police contact centre to one of the best in the country and the custody suite at Birchin Way in Grimsby is an excellent example of a modern facility, both buildings reflect the outstanding grading recently given to the force by His Majesty’s Inspectorate.
“Scunthorpe Police Station has served the town well for decades but does not reflect the high standard and working environment required by a police force in the 21st Century.
"I’m pleased to be working with North Lincolnshire Council to agree a site in Scunthorpe town centre to build this new police station and I will make further announcements once a plan has been finalised.”
This latest development through the Towns Fund comes after a raft of schemes have been developed to radically transform the town centre, all designed to bring in more businesses and new jobs, new homes and create a rich cultural quarter.
Holly Mumby Croft, MP for Scunthorpe, and vice-chair of the Towns Fund Board, said: "The investment in Scunthorpe continues at pace. This announcement is the latest part of a number of projects designed to create a new, more vibrant future for the town centre.
"Using the Towns Fund cash - some £21m from Government - we have delivered ultrafast broadband, will create a new science and technology centre for children and families and have built a new park and gardens.
"Alongside these, and the new police station, we are also working with developers to create new homes and bring vacant shops back into use - together these projects will create a new future."
